Plant Description

A deciduous tree with a rounded crown, growing to a height of 5-15 m.

Stem is erect and often multiple-stemmed, with smooth, gray-brown bark when young, becoming rough and fissured with age. The branching is dense, forming a rounded crown.

The leaves have three forward-facing lobes resembling a trident. The lobes are pointed and irregularly toothed. Leaves are dark green, smooth above, and paler below. They are arranged oppositely on the stems.

The flowers are small, inconspicuous, and greenish-yellow. They are arranged in drooping clusters known as corymbs. Each flower is perfect, possessing both male and female reproductive parts. Flowering occurs before or simultaneously with leaf emergence.

The fruit is a paired samara (winged seed), with each seed attached to a papery wing. The fruits are green when young, turning brown as they mature.
