Usages

Medicine - A decoction made from the leaves and stems of the plant is taken in empty stomach to treat night blindness, and taken as a decoction with salt, it’s used to stop vomiting. Food - The young tops leaves can be eaten raw or cooked. Eco-restoration- The plant can be used as a tertiary filtration system for domestic sewage

Plant Description

It is aquatic or terrestrial sprawling herb forming dense mats.

Stem is pinkish, hollow when mature, up to 100 cm long.

Leaves are opposite, narrowly elliptic or spatulate, up to 9 cm long, with entire or slightly toothed margins.

Flowers are reduced, bisexual in round white heads on long stalks from upper leaf axils. Each flower has 4-5 thin, papery bracts, 5 stamens, 1 pistil.

Fruit is tiny, one-seeded, thin-walled.
