Thrives in moist, shaded environments. Prefers well-drained soil in woodlands, meadows, and along riversides, at an elevation of 200-2700 m.

It is clumping evergreen perennial herb. Forms dense rounded clumps that grow wider over time.
Stem is short and inconspicuous, usually hidden by the leaves.
Leaves are numerous, narrow, and grass-like. Dark green in color, reaching 60-90 cm in length and 1-2 cm in width.
Flowers are greenish spikes, arching gracefully above the foliage. Spikes measure 15-30 cm long and 7-8 cm wide. Individual flowers are small and inconspicuous.
Fruit is bright red, berry-like, develop in late summer and persist through fall and winter, adding winter interest to the garden. Individual fruit is small, typically 0.3-0.5 cm in diameter.
