Plant Description

It is biennial or short-lived perennial herb growing 30-75 cm tall.

Stem is erect, smooth, sometimes thickened at the nodes.

Leaves are green to glaucous blue-green, tapered, 4-10 cm long and 1-2 cm wide.

Flowers are dense cluster of up to 30 flowers at the top of the stems, 2-3 cm diameter with five serrated-edged petals. Color: Wild plants are red with a white base, but cultivars come in red, pink, white, and even variegated patterns. Fragrance: Spicy, clove-like scent.

Fruit is capsule containing seeds, but not a significant ornamental feature.
