Plant Description

It is small to medium-sized perennial herb with creeping or upright rhizomes.

Stem is erect reaching 10-30 cm (occasionally up to 70 cm) tall and 0.1-0.2 cm thick. Green internodes, 1.5-6 cm long, often with blackish brown lower sections. Stem is ribbed and branched.

Leaves are reduced to scale-like sheaths at stem nodes. Sheaths are grayish-green to blackish-brown, with 5-10 pointed teeth.

Spore-producing structure called a strobilus, located at the tip of a stem. Strobilus is cylindrical, 1-9 cm long and 0.4-0.8 cm thick.
