Usages

Ornamental- Gazania rigens is used as an ornamental plant in gardens and as a groundcover plant. Medicine- Gazania rigens is sometimes used in folk medicine to treat pneumonia, sore eyes, headache, earache and sterility.

Habitat

Thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, in coastal areas and tolerates dry conditions. Can be grown as a perennial in warm climates or as an annual in colder regions.

Plant Description

It is low-growing half-hardy perennial herb forms trailing stems and tufts of foliage.

Stem is erect or trailing, up to 25 cm long. Covered in short hairs.

Leaves are blue-grey, narrow, and lanceolate leaves that grow in a basal clump. Leaves curve upwards at night.

Flowers are large, daisy-like flower heads with a central disc, typically up to 10 cm in diameter. Colors: white, cream, yellow, gold, orange, red, lilac (various shades). Petals: Can be solid color, banded with a dark ring around the disc, or have linear petal strips. Plants require high light for the flowers to open.

Fruit is dry, single-seeded.
