Usages

Ornamental- Cultivated as an ornamental and used as a border and hedge plant. Medicine- It is used in traditional medicine. Crushed fresh leaves and shoots are applied in rheumatism and rheumatoid arthritis; extracts of leaves and stembark are taken for dysentery, headaches, while leaves are boiled as part of a blood purifying concoction.

Thrives in the seasonally dry tropical biome, at an elevation of 300-1500 m.

Plant Description

It is erect or climbing shrub often growing to a height of 200-300 cm.

Stem is woody with a climbing or trailing habit if provided support.

Leaves are oval-shaped with slightly serrated edges, measuring approximately 7-15 cm in length.

Flowers are unique, trumpet-shaped with crimson petals and a large, orange-red calyx, resembling a hat.They are borne in dense clusters at the ends of branches.

Fruit is small, dry containing seeds.
