Usages

Ornamental- Widely cultivated as an ornamental, especially in the warm temperate zone and less frequently so in the tropics. Medicine- The plant is commonly used in traditional Chinese medicine.It is a bitter cooling herb that acts mainly on the lungs and the liver, lowering fevers and reducing inflammation. It is effective against a number of bacterial, fungal and viral organisms and has also been used as an antidote to snakebites

Plant Description

Perennial herb

Fan-like arrangement with 3-5 stems and 8-14 leaves per stem. Sword-shaped, medium green leaves up to 18 cm long.

Bright orange with darker red spots, blooming in summer. Ascend proximally on wiry, naked stems. Up to 2 inches (5 cm) across with six petal-like perianth segments.

Showy, dry seed pods that open in fall. Release clusters of black, shiny seeds resembling blackberries.
