Thrives in scrub, evergreen broad-leaved forests, sandy slopes along watersides, moist places in sparse forests, at an elevation of 300-3000 m.

Plant Description

It is spreading deciduous shrub.

Stem is upright with smooth, grayish-brown bark, can grow 100-300 cm tall and up to 5 cm in diameter.

Leaves are opposite, simple, elliptic to oblong-elliptic, glossy green, leathery. They are 3-8 cm long and 1-3 cm wide.

Flowers are small, white or cream-colored, tubular flowers with five lobes, borne in clusters at the terminal ends of branches. Flowers are about 1-2 cm long.

Fruit is small, globose, black berries about 0.6-0.8 cm in diameter. Berries ripen in late summer to fall and are attractive to birds. However, they are mildly toxic and can cause stomach upset if ingested by humans or pets.
