Plant Description

It is a deciduous plant, growing as a multistemmed large shrub or small tree, reaching a height of 3-10 m.

Stem is woody and often multi-stemmed, forming a rounded crown. The bark is smooth and gray when young, becoming rougher with age.

Leaves are simple, obovate, and deciduous. They are dark green and smooth above, paler below. Leaves are arranged alternately on the stem, and have a rounded or slightly heart-shaped base.

Flowers are large, commonly 10–20 cm across, cup-shaped, and showy. They are white, pink, or purple, often with contrasting colors. Flowers appear before or with the leaves, and are solitary at the ends of branches.

Fruit is a cone-like aggregate of follicles, green when young, turning brown when mature. The fruit splits open to release red, fleshy seeds.
