Plant Description

It is an herbaceous, rhizomatous, perennial plant that grows to be 30–90 cm tall.

It has a smooth stems, square in cross section.

Leaves range from 4 to 9 cm in length and 1.5 to 4 cm in width. They are dark green with reddish veins, featuring an acute apex and coarsely toothed margins.

Flowers are purple, measuring 6 to 8 mm long, with a four-lobed corolla about 5 mm in diameter and are produced in whorls around the stem, forming thick, blunt spikes.

Fruit is a small, dry nutlet, brownish in color. It is enclosed within the persistent calyx and is released when the plant dries.
