Plant Description

Annual herb reaching up to 22 meters (0.22 meters) tall with a creeping or decumbent (lying down with tips growing upwards) growth habit.

Slender, branched at the base, glabrous (hairless) or sparsely hairy. Can be reddish or brown depending on the variety.

Arranged alternately along the stem, ovate-lanceolate or ovate in shape, with ciliate (fringed with hairs) margins. Size: 3-6(-8) cm long and 1-2(-3) cm wide. Papery texture with a prominent midrib on the underside.

Pinkish, small (2-2.5 mm long) with 5 elliptic tepals (sepals and petals not differentiated). Stamens (male reproductive organs) typically protrude from the flower (exserted).

Achenes (dry, single-seeded fruit) that are blackish-brown, shiny, ovoid, and trigonous (three-angled) when mature.
