Plant Description

Annual herb up to 15-30cm tall.

Erect. slender, and branching, typically covered in short, bristly hairs. Stems can be green, reddish, or purple depending on the cultivar.

Arranged alternately along the stem, linear to lanceolate in shape with pointed tips and entire margins. Size: 2.5-5 cm long and 0.6-1.3 cm wide. Typically hairless or sparsely hairy, light green on both surfaces.

Single or occasionally double, with a flat, star-shaped corolla (fused petals) in various colors including white, pink, lavender, red, and purple. Each flower has 5 rounded petals and a central eye with contrasting color. Individual flowers are about 2.5 cm in diameter and borne in terminal clusters.

Ellipsoid capsule with a smooth surface, about 0.6 cm long, green when young. turning brown and splitting open when mature to release seeds.
