Food- Young leaves cooked and eaten as spinach. Medicinal- Used in traditional Chinese medicine as the root is antiasthmatic, antibacterial, antidote, antifungal, antitussive, diuretic, expectorant, laxative and vermifuge

Perennial herb

Erect, often branched stem that is cylindrical and smooth or slightly ribbed.

Elliptical, with a papery texture.

Small, white, clustered in raceme inflorescences.

Small, fleshy berries that ripen from green to purplish-black, containing red juice and small seeds.
