Plant Description

It is annual or biennial herb usually hairless or rarely sparsely velvet-hairy when young about 10-30 cm tall.

Stem is erect or ascending, leafy, simple or much branched from the base and above.

Leaves are variable depending on location on the stem. Basal leaves (wither before flowering): Obovate-inverted-lanceshaped, 2-8 cm long, 1-3 cm wide, margins irregularly toothed with lobes, stalkes. Lower and middle stem leaves: Smaller than basal, eared base (sometimes), margins irregularly toothed, 1-4 lateral lobes, becoming larger towards tip, short to no stalk. Upper stem leaves: Lance-shaped to oblong, entire or sawtooth margins, pointed to tapering tip, stalkless.

Flowers are yellow, borne in many-flowered racemes (clusters). Racemes 6-10 cm long, elongating in fruit. Individual flowers on erect, slender stalks. Sepals: 4, erect, linear-oblong . Petals: Mostly absent, or 4 small yellow petals, shorter than sepals. Stamens: 6, rarely 4.

Fruit is splitting pod, linear cylindrical in shape.
