Plant Description

It is a shrubby, scandent, or trailing, forming dense thickets.

Stems are typically cane-like, armed with prickles, and often arching or trailing. They may be woody and somewhat woody at the base.

Leaves are compound, usually with three leaflets (trifoliate), though sometimes with five. Leaflets are elliptic to ovate in shape, with serrated margins. They are typically dark green on the upper surface and paler beneath.

Flowers are small and white, arranged in clusters or racemes. Each flower has five petals and numerous stamens.

Fruit is an aggregate drupe, commonly known as a blackberry. It is composed of numerous small drupelets, each containing a single seed. The fruit is initially green, turning orange when ripe.
