Plant Description

It is woody herbaceous perennial commonly cultivated as an annual. Erect growth habit reaching a height of 90 cm.

Stem is herbaceous, erect with a square cross-section. Typically green and covered with fine hairs.

Leaves are ovate to triangular-ovate shape with toothed margins. Oppositely arranged on the stem with leaf stalks 3-4.5 cm long. Leaf blade measures 2.5-7 cm in length and 2-4.5 cm in width.

Flowers are showy, scarlet red with a tubular shape. Arranged in 2-6 flowered clusters (racemes) up to 20 cm long. Bracts are red and prominent.

Fruit is small, dry, nut-like seeds enclosed within the calyx.
