Thrives in margins of rice paddies, streamsides, wet grasslands, at an elevation up to 2000 m.
It is slender herb with erect stems reaching a height of 12-35 cm.
Stem is hairless or sparsely covered with fine hairs.
Leaves are triangular-ovate to ovate-lanceshaped, measuring 1.3-3.2 cm long and 0.5-1 cm wide. They have a broadly wedge-shaped to nearly flat base and remotely toothed margins. Leafstalks are 0.1-0.3 cm long.
Flowers are purple-blue, measuring 0.9-1.3 cm long. They have a unique swollen sac-like base and are arranged in poorly defined clusters at the ends of branches.
Fruit is produced in small, inconspicuous structure within the flower. The sepal cup is about 0.2 cm long, but can enlarge to 0.45 cm when fruiting.
Flowering: March-July.
