It thrives in cool, moist environments with shade or partial shade, at an elevation of 300-1000 m (-2100 m in some rare cases).
It is small clump-forming fern reaching 10-23 cm tall. Produces slender upright fronds with narrowly divided leaflets.
Stem is short and erect, with dark brown to black scales at the tip.
Leaves are triangular-ovate in shape and finely divided. Tri- to tripinnatifid, meaning the main rachis has leaflets (pinnae) further divided into smaller pinnules and segments. Fronds can reach 6-15 cm long and 2.5-7 cm wide. Green to grayish green in color with a thin, herbaceous texture when dry.
Flowers are small, oval-shaped clusters appearing on the underside of ultimate segments. Not a showy feature but essential for reproduction.
